Oh my goodness, meet up with people who remind you how great you are is the best advice ever. I find myself returning to the same people and I don't even need them to be telling me how they feel. Or that they think I'm cool or whatever. It's just something you feel as you sit down to have coffee and talk about something completely unrelated. And you come home recharged!

Yes, some friends just feel like Home and you automatically remember who you are when you’re with them.

Yes, this. When you have a friend or friends that are on your team and are present with you when with you, that is pretty much all that is needed. It seems so simple but it's oh so elusive! But it makes it abundantly clear when you aren't getting it from someone.

For sure. Some relationships can give you that and some just don't. And it's not even always people you know best or the longest, it's just some people click

Boy, we nailed the beets this year too but, chastened by last year’s green bean harvest, pulled up short on the beans this year. But the tomatoes ... oh god, we’re going to be buried.

I’m side-eyeing my tomatoes this year. I think something went wrong, because I have many blooms, but few tomatoes forming. I feel like they should be further along.

If it's anything like the bay area, we had so much rain this winter, and fairly late warmth, that all the tomatoes went into shock or something. Now mine are blasting off, but growing insanely tall, not wide. I have had to tie the tallest branches to 8-ft poles -- they overshot the cages! I'm assuming we will just have a late harvest this year.

My most recent hedgehog was named Mrs. Landingham (RIP to both of them). It was a missed opportunity that I didn't name my next pet, a 12 year old cat acquired from a family who developed allergies, Debbie Fiderer. But really Jessica Fletcher cat is a better fit for her- she's not so spunky and spit-firey, but more calm and polite.

I am so glad that you have people around you who know your greatness and tell you. I knew it right away, but don't have the time and the stories to remind you.

Jen and Bryan, I'm so sorry to hear your news about Syd. Sending love and strength across the pond.

My runner beans aren't ready yet - so I'm glad I can enjoy your crop by reading about them! Beetroot is my husband's favourite veg - shhhhh, but we're not growing any! We have a tiny veg patch, and I'm VERY disorganised in the gardening department...NEXT year, I hope.

Thank you for this fabulous advice: "Meet up with people who can remind you of how great you are." Noted!

I’ve heard that Seattle weather is similar to UK weather, so maybe your beans are just around the corner!

LOL, Jen - I'd love to think so, but I only sowed them in May, so I'm not holding my breath! They're in full flower, though, so I live in hope... for August!

So much goodness in this post. You’ve reminded me why I should rewatch West Wing again, why dogs are soul companions, why friends matter, and why I love your writing. But do you think I can make that beet salad without the beets? (Because to me they taste like you just dug up garden dirt and made it a pretty color....) 😂

I think the salad would work with roasted sweet potatoes if you like those! Or if it’s root vegetables in general that you don’t like, try heirloom tomatoes.

You really pack so much into your writings! Like your garden -- nutrient dense! I loved reading your examination of the character Debbie Fiderer in West Wing. I haven't seen it, but I feel like I did, after reading your words. I love when shows explore the depth and capability of our humanity. It's why I thought Reservation Dogs was the best show on TV last year. And I'm so sorry about the loss of Syd. I don't know what it says about me that I find the passing of beloved pets so much harder to bear than most human deaths.

What a treasure this "fill-in" post is! I must try a few of those recipes and plant some beets in our garden! We are needing to refill a few beds. Sorry to hear about your dog, I couldn't even read it. But I enjoyed the photos and laughed out loud as my eye caught the phrase "miss our crotch time." Looking forward to your newest endeavors coming soon. 💜

How do you smoke the beets?
