As much as I love Tina Turner, I couldn't read another word beyond Tina's video. I was left with you and Bryan and your peppers in the garden which is where I plan to stay sending my positive thoughts. Tina was a survivor, shining her light. It's always about a belief in ourselves. And as a gardener, I believe it's also always about the earth. 💜
Any relationship that gets it’s start at Powells is bound to flourish!
Favorite Tina song? There’s a lot to pick from, but I think it might be her version of “I Can’t Stand the Rain” or “Nutbush City Limits.” “Simply The Best” is fantastic too.
After picking the kids up from school we listened to “Simply the best,” “what’s love got to do with it’” and “proud Mary” - we also talked about the beautiful cover Patrick did for David on open mic night on Schitts Creek which I kept on my liked playlist all of Covid l!
I would actually love the age I am right now, too, if I didn’t have arthritis problems. I’d love to go back a few years to where I’m still old enough to be wise, but not in physical pain!
#cantfollowdirections: But of course, when I think of TT I think of Beyond the ThunderDome and not a particular song. Anything apocalyptic stirs my cocoa. And I also think of wanting to meet Ike in a dark alley. If you need a lift to the Amazon return drop off, just holler and I’ll bring the truck.
I was writing a new piece about recent documentaries about important, world-shifting women in rock and had only given the Tina documentary a quick mention because I didn't think the film was "simply the best." But after her passing, I'm going to rewrite it, or perhaps write a separate piece just on her. Just watched the Donna Summer doc last night. It took a little time for me to get used to all the interviews being voice-over only but it is highly recommended.
Love your garden and garden stories. I don't have nearly the space you have so all my beds are (over) filled with seedlings -- tomatoes, peppers, boy choi, cucumbers, squash, pole beans, and an eggplant. I always try eggplant every year and only once have I gotten much from it, but I keep trying! Same with carrots. I had my best yield ever last year, but they tasted terrible! Ha - at least they look amazing in photos.
And I hear you about the cancer-adjacent person being the careful, not wanting to make plans person.
Favorite age was 28. It was the year I lived on an organic farm on Vancouver Island. I wish that automatically made me a dual citizen...:)
There will definitely be more gardening content coming up since that’s all I do now. I can’t grow broccoli, or cauliflower, or cabbage. Ever. I’ve tried every spring and fall for three years and I’m finally giving up. I had a really great carrot year a couple years ago, though.
Thanks for the great entry. I don't feel like a high-risk person, but I've done a lot of daring things in my life. I'm in my late-40s now. I have the feeling that it should be a great time in my life, but I'm just not there, right now. I just moved countries. There have been a lot of unexpected hiccups, and I'm still adjusting to the new place.
I'm feeling and sitting with all of this. Glad you sowed the seeds. I have to think on the risk thing. We just met with a long-term care insurance guy so I'm thinking I'm pretty low-risk and hedge-my-bets. But honestly, there were days just after my breast cancer diagnosis when I felt very high risk and to-hell-with-it, especially while driving. I still don't know what that was about. And wow! Now I want to reread Blue Like Jazz. While listening to Tina. Or Bruce.
A beautiful post - particularly the Tina Turner connection to your first date with Bryan. Wonderful stuff!
I sowed my runner bean seeds a while ago, and early this week I noticed five (out of six, grrrr) little bean plants poking out of our raised bed. Delighted - but sad for the one that hasn't germinated. Maybe it's just taking its time...!
(I'm from a long line of horticulturists - yet to my shame I struggle in that department myself! The fact that ANY seed for which I've been responsible actually now has leaves and a stem is actually not bad going for this odd-one-out in my green-fingered family!) 🤣
I sowed a lot of extra seeds this year because they were 3 years old and I was concerned germination wouldn’t be great. Nope. It was great. I have a thousand tomato plants now. 😂

I’ve never heard her version of “I can’t Stand the Rain” -- it’s amazing!
And yes, we’ve made many trips to Powells since then!
I used to spend a LOT of time in the Rose room looking at airplane books.

Love ALL of these songs!
I’m a high-risk person, and my favorite age is the age I am right now (and I hope it always remains that way).

Oh man, I’m with you on the trial of dealing with arthritis! You have to get pretty comfortable living with pain don’t you?

We need a backyard movie night to watch "Children of Men"!
“stirs my cocoa” 😂

I think it’s pretty daring to move countries!

Bruce seems like good reading music!

LOL - I hope you love tomatoes, Jen! 🤣
