Today Is Indigenous Peoples Day!
A roundup of stories and resources from an Indigenous perspective.
Hi, it’s me.
On this Indigenous People’s Day (formerly known as Columbus Day) I’m sending out this quick note without a lot of fanfare (I’m technically on a writing break!) to share some Indigenous stories and perspectives that I’ve explored and enjoyed. This is a limited list, based on things I’ve personally read or listened to. If you have anything to add, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
Tune in all day for special programming to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 14th. Throughout the day, DJs will share music from people and communities who have been actively resisting histories of colonization since time immemorial.
Listen locally in Seattle at 90.3 FM or stream online or through the KEXP app. More information HERE.

An excerpt:
Yet we live on lands where equality bloomed once before,
when Indigenous nations lived by beliefs
and followed ancient laws that said an orca whale
and a cedar tree are sovereign, sentient beings
with inviolable rights, just like you and me.
Those beliefs are not childlike or primitive.
They are the blueprint for a just and fair society,
which for Native nations is not a vision but a memory.
Please comment below if you have any books, podcasts, movies or anything else to add to the list!
Until next time,
Jen

Unsettling Truths by Mark Charles and Soong-Chan Rah is profound. The doctrine of Manifest Destiny has changed the world in so many horrible ways.
Real Rent Duwamish is a good way to start giving back.
