Nice scene setting. You describe your place and your relationship to it in the moment without telling us, specifically, that's what you're doing. Not easy! Also, that's some of my favorite weather.
I have gotten a lot better at putting goals like “calm down” in my to do list and assigning associated daily tasks: play steam deck for 20 minutes, listen to Sam Harris, read the next chapter in my book, do 5+ min of yoga.
"I wondered how to best optimize my time so a single moment wasn’t “wasted”"
I think there are at least 1000000 self-help wellness non-productivity substacks that want to have a word with you! But, you know what -- comfortably sitting by a river idly watching fisherfolk in the rain sounds like a great plan. I hope you and Bryan are planning more get-aways like that! Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you. I should have mentioned you were one of my inspirations for this story! I just love how you slow down and describe experiences that seem ordinary and make me feel like I'm experiencing it with you. I thought of you while writing this.
Thanks for the diversion. I too have a challenge with down time. My mind being in constant doing or planning for the doing. What I’m struck with in your description of the events on the beach/water front on that gray and drizzly morning is how rich language and detail was there. It’s like by way of this seemingly sedentary mind-at-rest intentional act you activated so much observational awareness and linguistic clarity and output. It’s pretty fantastic as an exercise and learning.

Adding this to my to-do list is a great idea.

(edited to correct spelling; sorry, Bryan!)
+1
Sitting the banks of the Columbia is the cure for many, many things.
I love anywhere by the water. Even when I lived in NY for two years, I would go sit by the Hudson River and think.
So true! And yes, more getaways planned!
So nice you two were able to enjoy a little getaway! Loved the story about the fishermen. 💜
Thank you, and thanks for reading!
I loved this, Jen! And thank you for those gold stars! 😁
This post has transported me right there - what glorious descriptions of feelings, people and places. Awesome.
